Decanting
The purpose of decanting is twofold: (1) Separate the wine from any cork and sediment, and: (2) Allow the
葡萄酒 to interact with oxygen before drinking it. As such, the first step is to stand the bottle upright for a few hours before decanting it, in order to let the sediment settle to the bottom. When you are ready to pour, the wine bottle should be held gently, and the
葡萄酒 should be poured as slowly as possible into the decanter, to minimize the amount of sediment that is sent into the decanter. You may have heard people recommend that you should hold a candle under the neck of the bottle. You can do this if you choose, but the only reason for doing this is to allow you to see if sediment is beginning to reach the top of the bottle and is about to go into the decanter. If you see that sediment is about to go into the decanter, stop the pouring of the wine for a minute or two and wait for the sediment to settle again.
Once the bottle has been poured into the decanter, there is little reason to keep the stopper out of the decanter. The exposure to oxygen has already been significant. Contrary to popular opinion, the time of exposure to oxygen should be longer for young wines than older
葡萄酒. The other major factor in determining how long you air a wine is the nature of the wine itself. If it is designed to be aged for 20 years before drinking, and it is only 5 years old when you drink it, it needs considerable exposure to oxygen before drinking. The very same wine at 20 years of age, needs less exposure to air before drinking.
Opening the Bottle
Opening the bottle may seem the simplest of tasks. However, it is worth noting that the corkscrew of choice for those experienced with wine is something simple. The most important facet of the corkscrew is one that has a hollow center to the screw. Some corkscrews have a solid center, and all that does is guarantee that you will push a bunch of cork into the
葡萄酒.
Removing Wine Stains
No matter how careful you are, sometime you end up spilling some wine and staining your carpet (or something else). It turns out that there is a little know trick that can help remove the
葡萄酒 stain completely. The trick is to get some salt and spread it all over the area of the stain. You want to completely cover the stain, and press the salt down lightly into the carpet. The salt acts as a wick and draws the wine our of the carpet. If you act quickly (before the wine begins to evaporate) this technique will remove all the wine from the carpet and eliminate the stain.
